The foundation of this unit is Elie Wiesel's memoir Night. Although some of you will read through it quickly, we will spend considerable time discussing the details as it is packed full of a lot of important ideas. First and second bells are reading the most recent translation while third bell is reading the old translation.

We looked at one of the paintings in Robert O' Fisch's book, Light from the Yellow Star: A Lesson of Love from the Holocaust. Use these questions to help you analyze the painting: 1. What do you see? Describe what you literally see in terms of line, color, shape, content. Don't try to guess at meaning at this stage. 2. What do you think this picture or art piece symbolizes? What is its meaning? Whose viewpoint is shown and how do you know? 3. What tone do you believe is captured by the piece? Why? 4. Make connections to Elie Wiesel's Night.
